Michigan Department of Community Health has a grant for Request for Proposal for fluoridation equipment. This is offered to Michigan communities that currently do not use community water fluoridation or to communities that need replacement equipment to continue their use of fluoridation. Delta Dental has generously offered funds to sponsor this grant.
Please pass this along to city, township and village councils, to local area health departments, or representatives of these agencies that may be interested in acquiring help with purchasing fluoridation equipment.
The grant period is from June 1, 2010 to September 30, 2010 so there is time for discussion and approval of fluoridation.

2009-10 Senior Smiles Survey
Michigan Department of Community Health Seeks Volunteer Dental Professionals
The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) is recruiting dental professionals to assist in data collection for the 2009-2010 Senior Smiles survey. This is a screening assessment of Michigan residents aged 65 and older that live in Alternative Long Term Care Facilities (ALTCF). The focus of the survey is to provide definitive data describing the oral health status of Michigan's elderly population. Oral health status data will be collected on a statewide sample that is randomly drawn and includes alternative long-term care facility types. The Senior Smiles survey will result in a document that will provide scientific evidence of the oral disease prevalence of Michigan's aging population.

MDCH will train all local screeners at half-day workshops in several different geographic locations in an attempt to accommodate the screeners. MDCH is utilizing volunteers either through dental and dental hygiene schools, safety net clinics, sealant programs or local volunteer dentists or dental hygienists to conduct the Senior Smiles survey. MDCH thanks in advance those passionate and dedicated dental hygienists who participated in the Count Your Smiles survey and agree to assist with the Senior Smiles survey.

For more information or to sign-up as a volunteer, please contact Patti Ulrich, Oral Health Consultant, Michigan Department of Community Health at (231) 547-7677 or pattiulrich@hotmail.com.
