Oral Cancer Awareness – Michigan Event

The Oral Cancer Awareness Michigan has presented this event for the past 5 years. It’s great fun and every dollar will go to assist oral cancer patients and treatment programs. As you are well aware dentistry is the leading profession for oral cancer referrals and hygienists are recognized as those who are responsible for early detection.

Get a team together and make a day of it at Kensington Park. Click here for the Oral Cancer Awareness Michigan website.

CCOHF and Wrigley Company Foundation Oral Health Education and Program Promotion Opportunity

Since 2010, the Chicago Community Oral Health Forum (CCOHF) and the Wrigley Company Foundation have collaborated to bring oral health education and health promotion in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS).  The local reach of program has been tremendous.  The Wrigley Company Foundation and CCOHF would like to share in the success with other mid-sized cities with significant need for oral health education and promotion programming in a public school setting to students, teachers and parents.

CCOHF contracted with MDR, an educational development and marketing company with a track record of working with successfully with primary and secondary school teachers.  The resulting product is, a web-based series of modules based on a standardized curriculum developed by CCOHF, aligned with national standards and reformatted as an easy to use web-based resource.  This pilot phase of expansion reaches 5 cities: Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, Richmond and San Antonio.

The teacher-friendly materials are found on totaltoothtruth.com and are geared to students in the 3-5 grades.  The modules utilize the hands-on portions of the CCOHF oral health education curriculum. In addition to the digitized curriculum, the program offers teachers an opportunity to have a guest speaker in their classroom to deliver an additional interactive presentation, question and answer, or an oral health education lesson and activity.

Coalition for Oral Health for the Aging (COHA) Dental Days

Dental Days is a community outreach that COHA Care sponsors once a month for adults with disabilities who are unable to afford dental care. This population can and does fall through the cracks within the private office perfect whole treatment concept. We have partnered with agencies that realize the integral importance of maintaining good oral health.
Typically two hygienists are needed per patient as some patients require delivery of extra care during treatment. Currently we see patients at Tooth Town in South Lyon and provide each patient with cleanings, x-rays, perio charting, and oral hygiene instruction.

Upcoming volunteer days are:

  • July 18th
  • August 22nd
  • September 12th
  • October 10th
  • November 21st
  • December 5th

Please contact Dr. Elisa Ghezzi at eghezzi@umich.edu if you are interested in volunteering!

Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic 90 West University Drive, Pontiac, MI 48342
The clinic currently has a waiting list of over 300 patients who need their teeth cleaned before they can receive the dental work they need. The dentist and assistant do the exam and take the x-rays prior to the cleaning and the hygienist is responsible for the cleaning only.
The time commitment is up to 4-5 hours at a time and it is 1 patient per hour. The days available are Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays and the times are flexible so it can fit into a variety of schedules. If interested call Louise at 248-758-1690.

Helen M. Nickless Volunteer Clinic – Carol Wieland, RDH, Volunteer Coordinator
The Helen M. Nickless Volunteer Clinic, located in Essexville, MI, has combined efforts with Delta College and the Bay Arenac ISD to deliver dental care to the underserved and uninsured, adult citizens of the surrounding areas of the Saginaw Valley. Patients of the Health Clinic who have no insurance or government assistance, fall within the financial guidelines of the Health Clinic, and require dental needs, are referred to one of the dental sites, who so graciously give of their equipment and clinics.
Services presently provided for free are Comprehensive Exams, Radiographs, Prophylaxis, Fluoride Treatments, Amalgam/Composite Restorations, and Simple Extractions. The clinics run according to each school’s availability of the clinic and availability of volunteers.
Currently, students and faculty of the Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting programs at Delta College and students in the dental classes at Bay Arenac ISD along with community Dental Hygienists, Dental Assistants, and Dentists volunteer their time and energy to help meet the dental needs. Presently, the Delta Site is open on Wednesday evenings and the Bay Arenac ISD Site is open during the day as volunteers are available.
Our goal is to operate year round once we can achieve a larger base of community volunteers. If you wish to volunteer your services, please contact Carol Wieland at home (989)684-2136 or at the Delta Site (989)686-9543. To those area professionals and students who have given of their time – we say a BIG thank you for all your efforts in helping with “Access to Care” in this community.
