From your MDHA President!

Happy New Year!  I want to begin by thanking all of you for your membership in your professional association.  We appreciate that you understand the importance that your professional organization plays in the future of your profession.  Your leadership continues to work on your behalf in all areas that affect you.  We are diligent in our efforts to work with ADHA in the consolidation process.  We have been informed that their restructuring process is to result in an increase in member benefits from the national level.  We will continue to pursue those benefits for you.

On the legislative plain, we have two upcoming opportunities to meet face to face with our legislators.  The first event is on February 1, 2017.  That is an opportunity to meet with the newly elected officials and to educate them about our profession and our educational backgrounds.  The second encounter takes place on May 9, 2017.  That is our annual Legislative Luncheon.  That is your chance to meet as a group with the legislators in your area over a lunch format.  You not only have an opportunity to educate your local legislator, but also have the important role as mentor to a student dental hygienist.  Mark your calendar so that you can be a part of this important contact.

We continue to answer your request for face to face continuing educational events.  In collaboration with Northland Component, a phenomenal offering has been scheduled in Traverse City on March, 18, 2017.  Specific details are forthcoming. MDHA has again joined with MDA to present a quality experience at the Spirit of Michigan from April 26-29, 2017 at Devos Place in Grand Rapids.  Plan to attend with your friends for both the educational and social opportunities of the Annual Session.  Your Education Council has been busy.  There will be another continuing education offering in collaboration with the Superior Sunrise Component on September 23, 2017.  Watch for more information about this event.  ADHA Annual Conference information has been released.  This year’s event is in Jacksonville, FL from June 14-19, 2017.  Plan to attend with a group of friends.  It is always a great experience.

I wish you a wonderful 2017.  I hope that we will all continue to work together to better the profession of Dental Hygiene in this new year.  Remember that “YOU ARE KEY”!

Professionally yours,
Vickie L. Yahn, RDH
MDHA President

capital.jpgLegislative Update

Michigan has begun a new legislative session and a new legislature has been sworn into office.  All unsigned legislation from 2016 has been lost.  Per Sarah Hubbard update at the January BOT, it is anticipated that the limited prescription bill will be re-introduced, and some form of the Dental Therapist Bill will be presented.  Your legislative council will keep you informed.

****There is a new ruling effective January 6, 2017 regarding licensure renewal.  One credit in human trafficking is now required.  See R 338.11123 Training standards for identifying victims of human trafficking; requirements. Rule 1123 for further clarification.****

South Central Component will present the following seminar!

TOPIC: Understanding Human Trafficking: Moving from Knowledge to Action
SPEAKER: Dr. Jeremy Norwood, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology, Global Studies and Criminal Justice at Spring Arbor University
CEU: 4
LOCATION: Baker College Welcome Center, 2800 Springport Rd Rooms 1027&1028, Jackson, MI

Legislative Luncheon 2017 is now scheduled for May 9, 2017 a Tuesday, in the Mackinac room in the Anderson House Building.  Please mark your calendars.  Legislators are much more likely to attend if they are aware that they have constituents to speak with.

Education Council

The Council is finalizing seminar details on a Head and Neck Cancer Symposium presented by Dr. Steven Chang and the Henry Ford Hospital H&N Team that will be held Saturday, March 18 at the Hagerty Center in Traverse City.  This has already generated a great deal of interest in the dental and medical communities, and will fill up fast.  Watch the MDHA website, www.mdhatoday.org, for registration and hotel information.

Public Health Council

The Public Health Council has been working hard to provide MDHA members with quality resources covering a wide range of public health topics.  They have completed an excellent PA161 power point presentation, which is available for use.  They hope to bring this to dental and dental hygiene students, but the information is pertinent to anyone with an interest in a PA161 program.  Please contact Susan Deming, Council Chair, at demings@michigan.gov for further information.

Capital Region Dental Hygienists Association (C-RDH)

newswire january 2017-3.jpg

After Central and Genesee merged one of our biggest obstacles was communicating with each other. The creation of the C-RDH website and a Facebook page seemed the answer.  Our board voted to close the website as of December 2016. We continue to encourage hygienists to join our Facebook page.

Our component has the Dorothy Below Lesher scholarship that is made available to Lansing Community College and Mott Community College seniors. One or more students receive amounts from $500-1500 each at a dinner meeting we hold in February.  We host a spring seminar held in East Lansing in April.  We participate in Miles for Smiles and like to volunteer for a project every year.  Last year we made dinner and served it at a Lansing homeless shelter. We made a few Saturday breakfasts for the kids that included a few crafts also.

In December we like to have a fun get together where we chose different activities like painting or yoga.

November 19, 2016 we hosted a 6 CE seminar “Posture, Pain, and your Pelvic Floor”. The speaker Wynne Tezak is a physical therapist and provided one pain management credit. Attendees were able to walk away with several exercises and stretches to promote postural stabilization and function.  September 23, 2017 we will be co-hosting a seminar with MDHA at St. Ignace Little Bear East Arena and Community Center.  More information to come so save the date!
